If you're not an American citizen, then yes, you will likely be required to show proof of funds (and/or sponsorship) for the duration of your stay, along with a return flight ticket. Most, if not all, of this is covered in your application and interview for a visa at the embassy. Keep in mind that you cant bring more than $10,000. USD in cash or valuables when you arrive. If you do, you must declare it or they can seize all of it and deport you!
