Terry, you cannot get a temporary residence permit with this Q2 visa, but if you can change the Q2 to Q1, then you can get temporary residency of China.

You can change in China, no need to go out, but 1st you have to apply for 30 stay permit aka humanitarian visa & with stay permit you can apply for residence permit. I did

What is the benefit of changing from Q2 to a "temporary residence permit"? I know that Q1 has a longer duration than Q2, but also has more requirements to qualify and actually in Shenzhen they told me I cant change from Q2 to Q1. Even though I have been married to a Chinese national for 12 years and lived here for 15 years with a Q2 visa, now I can only get 90 day Q2 visas after they cancelled my 10 year visa last month. Very frustrated and not sure what to do. I am worried they wont renew my visa again and might tell me to leave China for America when this 90 days ends, which would ruin my life :(

You are not applying for "Q1" visa, you have to apply for spouse residence permit, i did straight in Gunagdong. You are not moving from Q2 to Q1, Q1 visa is only single entry visa valid for 30 days within this period you have to apply for spouse RP. And there is no to much paperwork, marriage certificate, spouse ID card, your passport, medical exam, that's all. Benefits, with spouse RP after 5 years living in Mainland you have a option to apply for permanent residence (not easy but possible).

Thanks for the info.

So if I can get a "Spouse Residence Permit", what is the typical duration of stay before it needs to be renewed and cost each time? I am assuming there are advantages over the usual Q2 10 year visa with 120 day stays. Every time I have gone to the immigration dept. over the years and asked about options, they always tell me there are none - only Q2.

As far as I am aware, the permanent residence or "green card" is very costly with many requirements, the main one being owning a home here or investing a substantial amount of money into a business, which we do not want to do.

Anyway, my biggest concern at the moment is this short term visa that expires in Sept. They wont give me a straight answer about what happens next, only to apply 2 weeks beforehand. It is very frustrating and nerve-racking!

1st time application RP for a year cost 800RMB, 2nd time extension you will get 1-3 years RP, 3rd time up to 5 years, price 800-1000RMB. With RP you can use also e channels on the border like any Chinese, no passport stamping, you can buy a car, house & etc for example. What they telling you is correct, they can't issue you a visa, but can residence permit.
