Extend my work visa from outside of China

Hi,

My work visa expired two weeks ago, and because of the outbreak I was not able to go back to China before it did. Now I'm not sure how to proceed. Can I apply for a renewal at the Chinese Embassy in my home country, or do I have to apply for a tourist visa, go to China, and then renew my current work visa?

Any tips would be highly appreciated! Thank you.

There is no point to do anything now as embassies are not accepting any application that is not for humanitarian purposes at this moment. New policies will be announced in due course, but with the second outbreak near China is not letting anyone in soon, including Chinese nationals stranded at the land border with Russia.
