About:Overstaying in China & Penalty

My China residence permit (visa in my passport) is expiring, but

I want to renew, not re-apply for my residence permit which as far as I know, can only be done within China. It's advised complete this 30 days before the expiration date (Mar 20 in this case). However, due the coronavirus and related travel restrictions, I haven't been able to return to China. Are there any alternatives?
Is it possible to apply for an extension, renew myself from abroad, or mail my passport to my assistant in China to renew without my being there, etc?

Currently there are no relief measures. Chinese missions abroad do not have the jurisdiction to renew residence permits, although sending in your passport may be possible if they don't require you to be there in person (it was the case very long time ago but not sure about it now).
