About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

What will I need

I am traveling from the US-->Shanghai-->Tokyo ( I have a 20 hour layover in Shanghai) Will I need to request a Temp. Visa to leave the airport ? Which one will I need ? if so do you know roughly how much it is?(US dollar)

You don’t need a visa if those are your only stops. You can request a free temporary entry permit to leave the airport, but it is not always granted. If your onward flight is on the next day (but within 24 hours) and you have a hotel reservation then your chances are much higher.
