About:China Visa on Arrival

Can US passport holder with reentery permit (based on Hong Kong residency) also hold a Chinese visa

I am a US citizen who was born in Hong Kong. I have a reentry permit which allows me to go to China (as a Chinese national) without visa. I am going to travel far inland and would prefer to use my US passport. Will I have problem applying for a visa from the Chinese embassy?
