Multi entry visa?

I'm an Australian citizen travelling to Shanghai, via a 2 hour stopover in Singapore. I will spend 3 days in Shanghai, board a cruise ship to Japan for 8 days, back to Shanghai for 8 hours, then depart on the ship for another 8 days in Japan, then fly back to Australia the same day the ship docks.
Do I need a multi entry visa as I will be technically arriving in Shanghai 3 times?

Lynetter, your first route is Australia - Singapore - Shanghai - Japan, which is eligible for the 144h visa-free transit. Your second route is Japan - Shanghai - Japan, requiring a visa. And I don't see you enter Shanghai for the third time from the above information.

I should clarify- the final stop for the ship is Shanghai. I will be arriving in Shanghai 3 times.

For the third time in Shanghai, you are eligible for the 24h visa-free transit. Therefore, in conclusion, you only need a single entry visa for this trip.
