Your in-laws can qualify you for a family-based residence permit if the municipal government approves your application (fairly straightforward in Guangdong and Shanghai). However, it may be a bit tricky if you haven't had Hukou or a Chinese Resident ID card before.

However, if you happen to have a Hong Kong permanent ID card, then you don't even have to apply for a visa. Simply renew your HKID and apply for a HKSAR passport in Hong Kong, then apply for a Home Return Permit from China Travel Service which entitles you to stay in Mainland China indefinitely.

No. All residence permits are processed by the municipal Public Security Bureaus. You can only get a Q1 visa in the UK. However if you have had a HKID (even if it has already expired) then going through the HK resident route is much simpler as you can legally purchase properties in Guangdong.
