OK, so your itinerary is:Hong Kong - Shanghai - JapanYour itinerary is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and it really doesn't matter whether you will stay in Shanghai during the parts of two calendar days. In other words, you don't need any kind of visa. You will be allowed to exit the ship on a temporary entry permit and you will be able to explore the city being it on your own or with an organized tour.
