About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Shanghai and Beijing on free visa?

If I’m interested in visiting China on the 144 hour free visa and fly to shanghai Pudong from the USA, am I able to take a day trip during my 6 day visit to Beijing to visit the Great Wall? I would be sure to fly back out of the originating airport. Or is that not possible under this type of visa?

There is no "free visa". If you are in transit to a third country, 144 hours transit without visa is permitted. This is not a visa, and you cannot visit both Shanghai and Beijing without a visa. So you must either change your plans or get a visa.
