I will just repeat my answer offered to another US citizens that has an itinerary very similar to yours:
Actually, it appears that you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai during your both stops. It is 24 hours visa free transit because you intend, at least I have understood it like this, to transfer from the plane to the ship and from the ship to the plane during the same day without having an overnight in Shanghai, so you will have less than 24 hour of transit time.
Anyway, to be certain about your eligibility here are several conditions that your itinerary has to fulfill:
- Your flight to Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional landing in mainland China and in Japan.
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China port.
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China port.
- Your flight out of Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional landing in mainland China and in Japan.
If the above conditions are fulfilled, you will be definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. You will print out your flight tickets and cruise tickets.
