About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US->Shanghai->Kunming->Lao

I will fly from New York to Shanghai Pudong airport terminal 1. I will board a new flight (no layover, no connection, a new itinerary) at terminal 2 and need to check in again for this flight. My second flight is 4 hours after I arrive in Shanghai & is going to Laos but it has a connecting layover in Kunming. Is it a problem to have a connecting flight or must I have a direct flight from Shanghai to Laos? If this is possible, do I just need the 24 hour visa free transit?

As long as your transit time in China is under 24 hours, you don't need a visa.

It doesn't matter that I have two flights in China to complete my trip as long as I am not in China for 24 hours?

Exactly. If your entire transit time within China, calculated from your first scheduled landing, in your case in Shanghai, until your final scheduled departure, in your case from Kunming, is less than 24 hours, you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. You will print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you.
