About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

NYC-Shanghai-Bangkok-Shanghai-NYC

Greetings. I am a US citizen planning to purchase a round trip flight between New York City (USA) and Shanghai, and a round trip flight between Shanghai and Bangkok, structuring the trip as follows:
-NYC to Shanghai (5 days in Shanghai)
-Shanghai to Bangkok (8 days in Bangkok)
-Bangkok to Shanghai (1 day or less in Shanghai)
-Return flight from Shanghai to NYC
Does this itinerary qualify for 144-hour visa-free transit in Shanghai?
Thank you.

Yes that is fine separate tickets is allowed. This is assuming you don't have any other Chinese landings/transits other than the ones you mention. Bring print out of e-ticket conformation emails showing the 16 digit (or 14-15 digits if leading zeros are dropped) ticket number to show proof in case you are asked.
