Applying for Chinese Visa more than 3 months in advance

When applying for a Chinese Visa in the UK, the Guidance Notes say '[do] not apply earlier than three months'. I'm at the point of booking to go to China in May and want to get the Visa sorted now too. Could I assume the Visa office will see I intend to travel more than three months hence and issue a six month 'Enter Before' date, or should I really wait until my entry is less than three months away to be sure the Visa will be OK?

British citizens have the option of requesting a two-year visa at no extra charge so it shouldn't matter.
