About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

72 hour visa-free transit

I am flying from Washington with a layover in Beijing and a final destination to Ho Chi Minh where I will be for 2 weeks. Do I qualify for the 72 hour visa-free transit in Beijing on the return trip from Ho Chi Minh to Washington?

If your itinerary is:

Washington - Beijing - HCMC
HCMC - Beijing - Washington

An you don't have any additional landing within mainland China, you are definitely eligible for 24 or 144 hour visa free transit both ways and you don't need any kind of visa. Whether you will be eligible for 24 or 144 hour TWOV depends on the length of your layover in Beijing. If your layover is less than 24 hours, you will be eligible for 24 hour TWOV and if it is just a minute longer than 24 hours, you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

You will print out your flight tickets and bring those printouts with you. Also, if you intend to have an overnight in Beijing, you will book your accommodation in advance and bring a confirmation with you.
