If your itinerary is:
Phuket - Guangzhou - Taipei
And you don't have any additional stop in mainland China, you will be definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in the entire Guangdong province.
You will print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in Phuket that you will travel to Taipei via Guangzhou using 144 hour visa free transit.
Upon your landing in Guangzhou, you will approach 144 hour visa free transit counter where you will fill out a blue form where you will have to write down the address where you will stay, the identity of your host and her/his phone number. Shortly after, you will get a sticker in your passport and be allowed to exit the airport.
You will also have to register yourself within 24 hours at the police station (PSB) that is relevant for the area where the home of your friend is. Also, your friend will perfectly knows which station is relevant for the area where she/he lives. To successfully register yourself, you should arrive at the station accompanied by your host. Beside the mentioned you don't need anything else.
