About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

A US passport holder, arrives Beijing Feb 10 at 11 AM leaving Feb 12 at 9 PM

need 72 hour Beijing visa yet flight schedule requires extra 6 hrs or 78 hrs total.

will i apply for 72 hrs or 144 hrs?

"72 hour Beijing visa" doesn't exist. You didn't mention where you are arriving in Beijing from, and where you are departing to. If you are not in transit to a third country then you need a tourist (L) visa. If you are in transit, then 144 hours transit without visa may apply.
