Can I apply for a tourist visa without an invitation letter?

I am Ghanaian but I would like to visit China, just for a week or two and just to sightsee. O don't know anyone in China and I intend to apply by myself. I'll book and stay in a hotel for the period of the stay. Will I still need a letter of invitation? I do not know anyone in China personally.
