Since you are a Malaysian, you should apply for a Chinese transit (G) visa through one of CVASC (Chinese Visa Application Service Center) that are located in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Penang. You can do a lot online, but the best thing you can do is to visit their website that is very well constructed and you will be able to obtain this visa in order to travel with the peace of mind.
You are supposed to apply and obtain this visa in your origin country and not in the country where you will travel to. Anyway, if you are living in a country different than Malaysia, your application will be accepted, processed and granted. There is an exception, of course. Your application will definitely not be accepted and considered for processing if you apply in your destination country. This is simply not logical.
To conclude, I can just hope that the situation regarding the Malaysian citizens and their ability to normally transit through China will be reinstated as soon as possible, but until then, a visa is a must.
