About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

LEX to Shanghai for New Years and then move on to BKK. Flight back has 20hr layover in Chengdu

Hello,
I am flying to Shanghai from Lexington, KY on Dec 29th and arriving in the evening of December 30th. Via the 72hrs transit, I would be leaving Shanghai on Jan 2nd early in the morning to head to Bangkok, Thailand. However, the flight back (approximately 8 days later) to the USA from Bangkok has a 20hr layover in Chengdu. Is it possible to leave the Chengdu airport during this time even though I used the 72hr transit a week before?

If Chengdu is your only stop in China within your itinerary from Bangkok to US, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Chengdu and you don't need any kind of visa. You will approach 24 hour visa free transit counter upon your landing in Chengdu where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. Here you will present your flight tickets and also a booking confirmation printout. Since your layover is very long, you will be allowed to leave the airport and to make an exploration of the city.

As far as your first itinerary is concerned, I hope that Shanghai is your only stop in China. If this is true, then you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa.

72 hour visa free transit in Shanghai has been replaced by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago. Also, you are advised to use correct terminology, because it is not 144 hour visa, but 144 hour visa free transit. There is no visa at all.
