Visa free transit?

I’d like to book a flight with three legs: Taipei to Rome, Rome to Chengdu, Chengdu to Taipei. The stop in Chengdu would be for 48 hours. Does this policy apply? Can I stop without a visa for 2 days in Chengdu?
