About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

Stopover length requirement on way to/from China?

I am a US citizen looking at the following itinerary: Portland, USA -- Tokyo -- Shanghai, then Shanghai -- Vancouver, Canada -- Portland, USA. My stopovers in Tokyo and Vancouver would be brief, just a few hours. If I book the flights separately (PDX-NRT, NRT-PVG, PVG-PDX), do I qualify for the 144-hour visa-free transit?

Yes separate tickets are allowed. How long the stop doesn't matter. Make sure pvg-pdx doesn't go through Japan as well.
