Hi there. I am a usa passport holder, traveling nov20th-27th 2019, LAX- shanghai-phuket (round trip)

With 23hrs leayover in Shanghai. I would like to make sure if I can travel without a Chinese Visa an still will be able to stAy in an hotel in Shanghai for 1 night and sightseeing around.

You can enjoy the 24h visa-free transit in Shanghai. If you have hotel bookings at hand, it's very possible that you will be allowed to stay in an hotel outside the airport.
