About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

Hong Kong Day Trip - do you have to pre-book prior to visa-free application

I want to travel from Australia > Guangzhou > Bangkok > Shanghai > Australia. I believe I can apply for multiple 144 hour visas as long as the travel is limited to the region and separated by international travel from those ports ie 144 hour visa for Guangzhou and another for Shanghai.

If I want to also do a day trip to Hong Kong or Macau whilst in Guangzhou, would I have to book the train ticket prior to applying for the 144 hour visa at Guangzhou airport even though I'd still be leaving for Bangkok?

First and the most important detail is that your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in both Guangdong province and Shanghai area.

If you want to visit Macau and/or Hong Kong, it would be a bit complicated...

You are not allowed to make a day trip outside the designated area and to remain eligible for your original 144 hour visa free transit.

So, you are allowed to do the following:

Australia - Guangzhou - Macau as new itinerary where you will have to take a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou port to Macau and you will also have to book this tickets in advance.

Hong Kong - Guangzhou - Bangkok as new itinerary where you will have to take a direct flight from Hong Kong to Guangzhou in advance. The reason for flying is in the fact that if you want to travel to Guangdong province from both Macau and Hong Kong using visa free transit, you can only do that by flying.

Between Macau and Hong Kong you can take a bus (to see HZMB bridge) or a ferry.

As you can see, you have to insert those two new destination, but in the way that they create new itineraries. So, if you decide to visit Macau and Hong Kong, you will have 3 144 hour TWOV itineraries:

Australia - Guangzhou - Macau
Hong Kong - Guangzhou - Bangkok
Bangkok - Shanghai - Australia

Now, when you know, you will make a decision.
