About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa-fee transit to Beijing.

Hi, I'm getting conflicting advice for the requirements of the 72/144 hour visa-free transit. We are looking to go from Tokyo to Beijing to Singapore. But the agent is proposing different airlines for the two flights. Do you have to be going through Beijing with the same airline, or is it just that you need to be going on to a different international airport ?
Also, is it still true that for Beijing the clock starts on the scheduled arrival time, rather than 00:00 on the following day ? (& does this apply for both the 72 & 144 hour requirements)
Many thanks.

72 hours has been replaced by 144 hours. Separate tickets and different carriers are fine. Currently the clock starts at 00:00 on the day following the day of arrival.
