If your itinerary is:

Taiwan - Shanghai - US

You definitely qualify for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. Of course, you are not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China on both of your flights!

72 hours visa free transit has been replaced in Shanghai by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago. Also, please, use correct terminology because it is not a visa, but a transit without a visa. There is no visa at all.
