First of all, your itinerary is eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. The reason is simple... Your total transit time in China will be just about 17 hours, less than 24 hours.
Assuming that you will fly on a single (through) ticket on China Eastern, it is almost certain that your luggage will be tagged all the way to Kolkata. Anyway, you will also ask for this detail at your check-in in Sydney. They will tell you this for certain.
As far as vegetarian food is concerned, you were supposed to choose a vegetarian (Hindu) meal during the booking process. Please note that meals cannot be ordered online once you have made your booking, instead call your local office and they will be able to assist you. So, if you have finished the booking process and you have not chosen a vegetarian meal, you should call a representative of China Eastern in Sydney at: Sydney Level 41, Suite 1 , One International Towers , 100 Barangaroo Ave , Barangaroo NSW 2000, Tel. 0061-2-93738600, Fax. 0061-2-92901153.
Upon your arrival in Kunming you can apply at 24 hour visa free transit counter for a temporary entry permit. Please, keep in mind that the issuing of this permit is entirely upon immigration authorities discretion. If your layover is during the night hours, you are advised to book your accommodation and to have with you a confirmation of the booking.
If you are granted a temporary entry permit, you can visit several local attractions like Golden Temple, Yuantong Temple, Green Lake Park, Kunming Western Hills (also called Sleeping Buddha Hills) with Dragon gate inside. Also, there are several squares and streets with interesting architecture. If you will be granted a temporary entry permit, you will have all your time filled with exploration of the mentioned Kunming details.
