About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Shanghai hotel stay pre and post cruise

We are flying from UK to Shanghai in October 2020. We are staying for 2 nights in a hotel in Shanghai and then going on a 7 nights cruise to Japan. After the cruise we will be staying one night in Shanghai before flying back to UK. Do we qualify for the 72 hour China visa waiver?

Yes, you do, but under the following conditions that you will easily check by yourselves within your itinerary:

- Your flight from UK to Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China and in Japan
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your flight from Shanghai to UK or some other country is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China and in Japan

If the above conditions are fulfilled, you are perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice.

Please, have in mind that 72 hour visa free transit has been replaced in Shanghai by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago.
