About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

Is there a transit visa that would enable me to visit Xian from Melbourne

then transit to hing Kong before returning back to Melbourne

I suggest you to book a return flight ticket from Melbourne to Hong Kong and back.

After that, you should book two separate tickets:

Hong Kong - Xi'an
Xi'an - Macau

After you have arrived in Macau, you will easily return to Hong Kong.

As you can see, your 72 hour visa free itinerary in Xi'an will look:

Hong Kong - Xi'an - Macau

or

Macau - Xi'an - Hong Kong

You are allowed to stay in Xi'an for three nights. For example, if you arrive in Xi'an on November 2nd, your flight out of Xi'an has to depart until November 5th at 23:59.

One more detail. You are advised to use correct terminology because it is not a transit visa, but 72 hour visa free transit. There is no visa at all.
