About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruising into Nansha then forwarding to Hong Kong

Hi
I am an Australian Citizen and cruising from Dubai to Japan with a day stop at Nansha (Guangzhou) and moving onto Hong Kong for a 1 night stop over in Port before cruising on to another country. I am getting really confused as to what kind of visa I need for China. Can you please advise if a 24 hour transit without visa will be ok and will I need to obtain this before the cruise or can I obtain when I arrive in port?

This detail regarding Nansha port visa free transit is still a bit of a grey zone. In reality, if your cruise is not scheduled to arrive in Nansha before 2020, it would be the best to wait for a while and see what will happen after a new, state of the art cruise terminal is open in November. The management of the port and also the city of Guangzhou are aggressively lobbying for amending the rules that are actually in force for Guangdong province because they are trying to get the same rights already in force for great cruise ports like Shanghai, Tianjin and Xiamen. If your cruise is scheduled to arrive in Nansha before 2020, I would suggest you to obtain a Chinese transit (G) visa in advance. If this is not the case, let's wait for a while and see what will happen within a following couple of months from now.
