What kind of visa do we need?

Hi. In December we'll be travelling from Taipei to Los Angeles. We're US citizens. Our flight goes:
Taipei to Fuzhou (20 hour 45 minute layover)
Fuzhou to Xiamen (2 hour layover)
Xiamen to Los Angeles
If we want to leave the airport and explore Fuzhou for the day, what visa do we get? This city doesn't qualify for 24 hour exemption and we can't do the 72/144 hour exemptions because of our flight path, correct?

Recent practice by Chinese immigration indicates that Fuzhou has become an eligible airport for 24 hour visa free transit, but because of relative scarcity of credible testimonies, I would suggest you to obtain the best option for US citizens - 10 year long term, multiple entry tourist (L) visa. Of course, you could apply for a transit (G) visa, but it would be a nonsense since the price for a single entry transit visa is the same as for a 10 year longer term, multiple entry visa. I just hope that you are still in US because obtaining a Chinese visa in Taiwan is next to impossible.
