About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit visa advice

Please could you advise me about the 72 hour and 144 hour transit visa. We hold British passports and will be arriving in Beijing on Friday 17th April 2020 at 11.55 from Manila. We depart from Beijing on Monday 20th April at 11.40 returning to the UK. Would we apply for the 72 hour transit visa upon arrival in Beijing Airport? Do we have to notify Philippine Airlines (our flight into Beijing) that we need to apply for a transit visa?
Also, I visited Turkey in May this year and have Turkish stamps in my passport, I have heard that this could cause a transit visa to be denied, can you advice on this please?

Thank you for your help,

Jane Wright.

A "transit visa" is something that you obtain from the embassy/consulate before travel and you pay for it. Also, "visa upon arrival" is not available at Beijing. It is important to understand that if you use this terminology you risk misunderstandings when you are dealing with your airline. You must tell your airline (at the airport on the day of travel only, it's a waste of time to contact them in advance) that you are "in transit without visa" and show them your onward confirmed tickets. Then you obtain a temporary entry permit on arrival in Beijing. Your Turkey stamps may or may not prompt questions, but if you were there for legitimate reasons it is unlikely to be anything to worry about.
