S1 visa to residence permit - requirements and location

Hello

I'm a European PhD student at a Chinese university in Shanghai currently staying on an X1 visa converted to a temporary residence permit. My wife (also European) will join me on a S1 visa, and will have to exchange that for a residence permit when she arrives (she will stay for 8 months). Will she need an invitation letter from my university, or can we manage to get her the residence permit without the involvement of my university?

Secondly, we will be living in Beijing because of my research. I had to get the residence permit issued in Shanghai (because of my university's location), but will the case be the same for my wife since her visa is 'attached' to me and my visa, or can we apply for her residence permit in Beijing?

Well, in normal cases, the invitation letter from your uni is not required as long as you can provide her your passport and residence permit.
