Layover/connecting flights disqualifies free Visa

I have a valid US passport. I will fly from US to Shanghai with 2hours layover in SHE. After arriving in Shanghai, Stays 2 nights in Shanghai. Then go directly Japan on a cruise ship.
Do I qualify 72 hour free Visa?

Well, as you will have layovers both in Shanghai and Shenyang, you do not qualify for the 72 or 144 hour visa-free transit in Shanghai.
