About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

China has temporarily suspended the 24hr visa

We spent 19hrs in Shanghai airport after beu g turned away at the 24/72/144 immigration desk. We were told to return to our home country and apply for a Visa there before entering China on a transit Visa. Thanks China.

There is no such thing as 24 hour visa. You were not denied the 24 hour transit without visa. It requires you to stay in the international transit area.

You were denied entry permit to leave the airport, which is up to immigration discretion. Usually they allow if you show confirmed hotel reservation. Maybe they are being stricter on leaving airport with National Day and Golden Week coming up but 24 hour transit is not suspended.
