You don't need a visa, and "72 hours free visa" doesn't exist anyway. You can apply on arrival for a temporary entry permit to enter China, but it is issued at the discretion of the immigration officer. 8 hours may be refused, but may be fine.

Actually, during both of your arrivals in Shanghai, you will be less than 24 hours in transit. If this is the case, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice. Having this in mind, you cannot apply for 72 hour visa free transit (actually this option was replaced in Shanghai by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago), but for 24 hour free entry permit. You will apply for this permit upon your landing in Shanghai at 24 hour visa free transit counter. Here one detail... You should be aware that the issuing of entry permit, within 24 hour TWOV is always under the discretion of immigration official. In any case, you should definitely try to obtain one.
