About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

do i qualify.....

ok...we are traveling from the usa...to the Philippines then to shanghai for 4 days and then back to the Philippines and then home to the usa. can we qualify for the 144 hr visa free transit or do we need a visa

Actually, your presented itinerary is not eligible:

Philippines - Shanghai - Philippines

As you can see, this is a return trip or a visit to China. There is no a third country! I would suggest you something like this, a triangle:

Philippines - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Philippines

This itinerary is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

As already mentioned by Juliet, if your itinerary remains as you have presented it, you definitely need a Chinese tourist (L) visa obtained in advance.
