Unfortunately, you will have to obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa in advance because your cruise will travel through two Chinese transit zones in a row (Xiamen - Shanghai) and that is not allowed under 144 hour visa free transit rule. I can just direct a criticism to the planner of your cruise because it was ideal to introduce one of Taiwan ports between Xiamen and Shanghai and it would make you perfectly eligible for 24 and 144 hour visa free transit. OK, the good part of this whole circumstance is the fact that US citizens are eligible for 10 year multiple entry Chinese tourist visa, so you can even consider this as an investment :)
