About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Need of TWOW or permit/visa if not leaving the airport?

Hello everyone,
Quick question, I am with a French passport and will travel from France to Japan Round trip (stay in Japan of 2 weeks)
I have a layover time between 4 and 5 hours in Beijing for each trip.
If I wish to remain inside the airport do I need to apply for any permit? Or do I just need to have my passport and onward ticket to France or japan?

Thank you for your help

Thank you so much for your answer
So if I need to get my luggage and redo check-in in Beijing, a 24h visa free transit should be enough? I am able to ask For it at the Beijing airport if understand well

This detail depends entirely on the type of your flight ticket. In case if you are traveling all the way from France to Japan on a single (through) ticket, you will not need to apply for any kind of permit. You will also remain within the transit zone (sterile area), although an immigration check (within the transit zone) is quite probable. Security check is inevitable. The same thing is valid for your travel back from Japan to France.

Anyway, in case if you are flying on separate tickets, you will have to apply for an entry permit to be allowed to collect your luggage and to perform new check-in.

Part one:

There are two different things when we speak about your travel and they are so easily confused. Anyway, I will explain them and you will not have any doubts after that.

1. 24 hour visa free transit

You will use this option for your travel from France to Japan. You will also declare in France at check-in that you will fly to Japan via China using 24 hour visa free transit. This option covers your transit through China and allows you to be free from issuing of any kind of visa. In reality, you never formally and visibly apply for this option and you never get any confirmation that you are flying using this option. This option is simply understood by itself. You will just inform your French check-in about it, they will ask to see your tickets and if everything is OK, you are allowed to enjoy this option. You can compare this option with visa free transit in Paris for, for example, Indian citizens... They take Air France flight from Delhi to Paris, they stay at the transit zone and after that, they proceed by another Air France flight to Montreal. They do not receive any confirmation, they do not apply anywhere for anything because their tickets tell everything necessary. The difference between the transit in Paris and that in China is that the Chinese 24 hour visa free transit is far more liberal because it allows even more stops within China and also allows the passenger to use domestic flights if necessary. Also, this option allows, under the several conditions, the following "thing".

Part two:

2. 24 hour free entry permit

This is another thing and this permit allows passengers flying on separate tickets or on several stops through China to exit the transit zone, to literally enter China and to perform all the necessary formalities and actions that are necessary for their transit to the third country. In other words, if you are traveling on separate tickets, you will have to apply for an entry permit upon your landing in Beijing to be allowed to collect your luggage and to perform new check-in. Of course, if you are traveling on a single (through) ticket, you don't need this permit because you will remain within the transit (sterile) zone all the time. Anyway, in some cases when some particular airline does not check your luggage all the way to your final destination (you will know this detail upon your check-in in France) despite your single (through) tickets, you will have to apply for this permit regardless of the fact that you are flying on a single ticket. In reality, the examples of this kind are extremely rare, but they could happen. In any case, you will be just fine and you will enjoy your travel.
