Hello, my flight from Manchester has a layover in Hong Kong for 2 hours then flying over to Shanghai for 2 nights, and was hoping to benefit from the 144 hrs visa-free for Shanghai. But will I need a visa from Hong Kong to Shanghai? thank you very much

Yashna, in case if you are a UK citizen and if you intend to travel from Shanghai to some third country, different than both mainland China and Hong Kong:

Hong Kong - Shanghai - X country (different than both mainland China and Hong Kong)

Then you are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. Also, you don't need any kind of visa because of your segment from Hong Kong to Shanghai. Please, keep in mind that you are not allowed to have any additional stop within mainland China of any kind to remain eligible for the mentioned visa free transit scheme.

OK, now I see in the title that you have mentioned that you are flying from Shanghai to Tokyo.

Yes, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area.
