yangtze river cruise

Traveling from the United States. I will be in Chengdu from Dec 16 - Dec 28.  I will stay at a hotel in Chengdu.  Will be booking my airline and hotel on my own.  Is this a good timeframe to get on the Yangtze River Cruise?Also in terms of visa, can I get the tourist visit? or can you recommend a type of visa?Also, I will like to travel like a local opposed to a tourist. Visit the Chengdu museum, take the Chengdu site seeing bus etc.  I know I can take the subway to Tianfu square. Is it possible to travel like a local or will I need a tour guide for english speaking?

In my opinion, Dec 16 - Dec 28 is not a good time to take Yangtze River cruise as in winter, the water level of Yangtze River is very low so that the cruises are often cancelled. Besides, during that time, the weather on Yangtze River will not be good, the temperature will be extremely low and you will not have a good view due to fogs. As a result, I suggest you take the Yangtze River cruise after April. In terms of visa, you can apply for the tourist visa at the Chinese embassy. It is possible for you to travel to Chengdu on your own as the public transportation system (subways or buses) is very convenient and the google map can lead you to everywhere you want. However, it is a better choice to employ a local guide if you want to learn more information in the attractions.
