About:China Transit Visa

Internal connecting flight in China Visa required?

My son's girlfriend is a Philippine national who travelled to the UK from the Philippines with a student visa for the UK last week. Her ticket was with China Air with the following itinerary:
Manilla - Guangzhou (On the ground for 2 hours)
Guangzhou - Tianhe (On the ground for 4 hours 30 minutes)
Tianhe - Heathrow

She was denied onto the flight at Manilla stating she needed a visa for the internal Chinese connecting flight.

All the info on the internet suggests if in China for less than 24 hours and not leaving the airport, no visa was required.

Was this correct? She lost the money for this flight and a new flight taking a different route has cost me a fortune.

She is supposed to be eligible for the 24-hour visa free transit.

To add to this, my son, a UK national was allowed on the flight. Is the issue that she is a Philippine national?

For 24 hours transit, neither British nor Filipino requires a visa. She was wrongly denied boarding. Your only hope is to take it up with the airline. If you don’t get anywhere with them, Air China have a London address so perhaps you can go the MCOL route.

Thanks, I'll get back onto the airline who refuse to budge saying she needed a visa for the internal flight. She was not the only person denied boarding to this flight I am told with some very upset people turned away

Hi Jason,

Did the Manila Airport mention the type of visa needed for the internal Chinese connecting flights? I am also a Philippine passport holder and I have a similar flight this December, although my destination is at SFO, USA. My flight itinerary is Manila - connecting flight in Guangzhou - stopover in Wuhan - SFO, USA. I am hoping for your response. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I was not there, my son was. She was simply told her UK Student visa, as a Philippine national, did not allow her to take the internal flight in China. But, my son, a UK national was. She was told she had to apply for a specific visa to cover this. I would suggest you contact the Chinese embassy to find out what specific visa is required for this (if at all). If they say you do not need one then I suggest you get that in writing before attempting to board the flight.
