China 24 hr transit visa TWOV vailidity for 2 stop flight in China

I was told that 24 hour period starts when you land first stop and departue from second airport must before 24 hrs end. But its a little confusing.

Let me run my scenario.

On my return trip I arrive in Kunming-China 7:40 am on 9/14.

Lets say I pass through immigration and get transit visa stamp at 9:00 am on 9/14.

I fly from Kunming to Shanghai 11 am and reach Shanghai(Hongqaio) 2:30 pm on 9/14.

I stay in Shanghai and next day reach Shanghai(Pudong) airport and clear immigration around 8:00 am on 9/15.

I fly from Shanghai to New York at 11:30 am on 9/15.

So technically I am in China from 9 am on 9/14 to 8 am on 9/15 which is within 24 hours.

In that case why do I need tourist visa? Or will 24 hour TWOV suffice

You definitely need a tourist visa or different flights. 24 hours transit without visa does not apply. The time is based on scheduled arrival and departure times. The time you clear immigration is totally irrelevant. Without a visa you won’t get as far as Chinese immigration anyway, because your airline will surely deny your boarding at your origin.
