shanghai zhongshan east second rd-xinkaihe rd to the airport super early?

I need to get from the Laobeimen area to the airport. wouldn't be a problem with the subway but, I need to be at the airport by 4:00am. Is it best to just take a night line or something really late to get there and wait around? If so, what options and routes could I take?

4:00 am is too early and the subway hasn't started operating during that time. As you said, you might need to reach the airport one day in advance. You can take shuttle bus line 5 from East Yan'an Road Station to the airport, which runs from 5:00 to 21:30 with CNY18-25.
