About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hours in Beijing

I am looking at a flight into Beijing on 9/19 at 240 PM from Singapore with a flight outbound to the US at 425 PM on 9/22. From what I can tell from what is given above, this 73.6 hours might lead to the visa being denied... Beijing is the only one strict on the 72 hours and nothing more?

That is very out-of-date. It’s been 144 hours in Beijing for a long time now.

Great news. Then that leads to a follow up question... to try to play the 72 hour rules, I was going to fly Seoul to Shanghai, Shanghai for 36 hours, then Shanghai to Singapore for 36 hours before going to Beijing for 72 hours. That said, could I do 72 hours in Shanghai and 72 hours in Beijing back-to-back and still be within the rules? It seems like I couldn't travel directly between them with the rules that exist, but maybe I am reading that wrong too?

You cannot go from Beijing to Shanghai without leaving the country in between. The clock restarts with every entry to China, so you can stay up to 144 hours each time.
