Youwah, is your itinerary:
Chicago - Taipei - South Korea
If so, you will be in transit in Taiwan that is not part of mainland China, so it has different, autonomous immigration policy. According to Taiwanese visa transit policy that says:
Travellers continuing their trip to a third country by the same or connecting plane on the same day of their arrival on condition that they:
a. Have tickets with confirmed reservations and all documents needed for their next trip;
b. Do not leave the transit area unless observed by an immigration officer. Travellers arriving after midnight must be accompanied by the carrier to the transit hotel. If travellers wish to stay in the transit hall, they must obtain permission from the police office; the carrier should undertake such arrangements; and
c. The receiving carrier should have a list of the travellers' names, their flight number and their destination before their arrival. In case the carrier sent the travellers' manifest by cable, the 'TWOV' code should be marked together with the connecting flight number and destination. Connection is possible after a time interval of at least 60 minutes, and TWOV may not be allowed for connection less than 60 minutes.
You can conclude whether you are eligible for visa free transit or not.
