About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Will I be able to use the 144 Hour visa?

I will be flying from SFO to HKG, HKG to Shanghai, Shanghai to LAX. Do I just need proof of ticket purchase for the Shanghai to LAX when I try to leave customs? Also my friend is in Shanghai for the week and I am planning to stay there, however my name will not be on the reservation. Will this be ok? Do I need my own hotel reservation?

Your visa free transit begins in Hong Kong, but at the moment of your departure from Hong Kong in direction to Shanghai. At that very moment, you will need both tickets in your hand, Hong Kong to Shanghai and Shanghai to Los Angeles. Otherwise, you would be denied boarding the plane. Please, have in mind that both of your flights should not have any additional landings in mainland China and your flight Shanghai to Los Angeles should not have a landing in Hong Kong.

Also, you are perfectly allowed to stay at your friend, but upon your arrival in Shanghai, you will have to fill out the form where you will clearly state his name and his address. After that, you will have to, accompanied with your friend, perform the registration at Public security bureau (PSB). Please, don't forget to make this registration because it is compulsory.

By the way, this visa free transit scheme is called 144 hour visa free transit and not 144 hour visa. There is no visa at all.
