Yes, it is. You are perfectly allowed to use the above itinerary, but you should have in mind that the process of train ticket purchase is somewhat delicate. I will explain:
- You are allowed to use only the trains departing from Guangzhou East railway station and terminating at Hung Hom railway station in Hong Kong. This is so called slow train, but in reality it takes a bit less than 2 hours, so it is quite fast
- When booking this train, you have to use the websites that will send you an e-confirmation with your name on it. This is the website that does exactly that.
- Your booking has to be done at least 7 days before your train departure because this is the time required for a ticket to be delivered to your hotel in Guangzhou
- As you can see, you are supposed to have at lest an overnight in Guangzhou to collect your ticket there
So, if your trip is not so close, you can use this option. Anyway, if your trip is close, you will still take a flight to Guangzhou and do the following:
- Take a high speed train from Guangzhou to Shenzhen and for this train you can book a ticket online and collect it at the train station by presenting an e-confirmation that you will receive in your inbox
- Take a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou port to Hong Kong Macau ferry terminal. You will have to book this ticket online, print out an e-confirmation and have it as a proof that you will really perform a transit. You will collect your real ticket at Shekou terminal
You should have in mind that you are eligible for both, 24 and 144 hour visa free transit in relation to duration of your transit time in Guandong province.
