My travel agent in Taipei said the same thing, that their staff have passed through the LoWu crossing several times with their Apples without incident. Yet, I saw one piece online saying that they can charge 10% of the value - and it didn't clarify if this was also for personal i phones. Also read last week of a foreigner crossing the line, when they checked his phone and found pics of the demonstrations and as a result held him and took his blood sample for a DNA record. Hope you chaps are right.
