About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

arrive in Shenzhen or Guangzhou, drive across border to Hong Kong for flight departure from HK

Would this 144 hr visa free transit apply for this situation?
My husband works and lives in Dongguan, Guangdong, My daughter will visit for a few days, then they will fly to the Philippines from HK. So would this enable her to fly into either Shenzhen or Guangzhou, stay with my husband for a few days in Guangdong, then drive or take the ferry across the border from Shenzhen to HK for departure from HKG?

Sorry for the late reply, I appreciate your help. I've been trying to work the details on on this. I saw somewhere...and don't remember where now! That in Guangdong, the visa free transport is only good for 72 hrs? and I'd like to confirm that if my daughter arrives at the Guangzhou airport, that she can take Shekou ferry into HK Central and it doesn't have to be the airport, correct? (Although it can be the airport)
Thanks again, Linda

I don't see how to edit my previous reply. I should add that my daughters itinerary would be USA-HK-Manila-Guangzhou- HK- USA. I'm thinking the Manila - Guangzhou -HK segment is all that matters to China?

Assuming that you are US citizens, your husband can drive across the border to Hong Kong, but your daughter is not allowed to do that. If using Shenzhen as arriving airport, she will have to stay in Guangdong province at least for a period of 24 hours and 1 minute to be allowed to cross into Hong Kong. In other words, it is not allowed to use Shenzhen airport for 24 hour visa free transit purposes.

So, she will have to book a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou terminal to Hong Kong Macau Ferry terminal through CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport company website. She will receive an e-confirmation in her email inbox and she will have to print it out and take with herself as a proof for 144 hour visa free transit eligibility within the itinerary: X country (different than both mainland China and Hong Kong) - China (Guangzhou or Shenzhen) - Hong Kong.

As you can see, she is eligible to do everything you have mentioned with the exception that she will have to travel between Shenzhen and Hong Kong by ferry as described above.

In case that she plans to fly immediately from Hong Kong airport, without visiting the city, then she will book a ticket from Shenzhen Shekou port directly to HKIA Skyper through the same website. Like this she will greatly simplify the entire procedure regarding the formalities within the transfer from Shenzhen to HKIA.

It changed to 144 hours earlier this year, but many other websites are still out-of-date.

As already mentioned by Saul, your itinerary is fine and it will allow to your daughter to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in the entire Guangdong province. She can explore very wide area and the best option to arrive from Guangzhou to Shenzhen is by high speed train. From there she will take the mentioned ferry that is eligible option to depart from mainland China toward Hong Kong. When buying your ferry ticket, don't be distracted by the statement that the tickets bought through internet should be collected in the relevant offices in Hong Kong. In reality, she will be perfectly able to collect her ticket in the Shenzhen Shekou terminal.
